The basic 30-day rule
Costco's current published policy says eligible members can request a price match when an item they bought drops in price within 30 days of the purchase date. That is not the same as matching a competitor: Costco specifically says it does not price match other retailers.
The practical takeaway is simple: if you buy a Costco item and see Costco itself lower that same item's price shortly afterward, check the date immediately rather than waiting.
Sale dates can make the window shorter
A common mistake is assuming “30 days” means you can wait 30 days to submit every request. Costco's current policy adds an important condition for promotions with specific sale dates: your request must fall within both the 30-day purchase window and the active promotional period.
So if a sale ends tomorrow, submitting next week may be too late even though your original purchase was less than 30 days ago.
Costco.com and warehouse purchases are handled differently
For Costco.com orders, Costco directs shoppers to its online price-match form. Approved credits are typically returned to the original payment method. For warehouse purchases, Costco says to ask at the Returns counter of the warehouse where you bought the item.
Costco also says it does not match a Costco.com purchase to a lower warehouse price. Online prices can include shipping and handling costs that do not apply in the warehouse, so the two channels are treated separately.
Important exceptions
- Competitor prices do not qualify.
- Precious metals are excluded from price matching and promotions under the current policy.
- Product or promotional quantity limits still apply.
- Costco reserves discretion to deny requests and can change the policy.
- Special-order and installed home-improvement promotions follow separate timing rules.
A low-effort Costco habit that can save money
- Keep the order number or receipt for larger purchases.
- For the next 30 days, pay attention when the same item appears in a Costco promotion.
- If the drop is meaningful, verify that the model/item is the same.
- Submit immediately if the promotion has a stated end date.
This is especially worth doing on higher-ticket purchases where even a 10% reduction can be meaningful. It is less useful to spend time tracking tiny price changes on low-cost items.
Bottom line
Costco's policy is useful because you may not have to return and rebuy an item just to capture a later Costco price drop. The biggest trap is timing: a dated sale can effectively create a deadline sooner than day 30.
