For eligible shipped items, Sam's Club says active Plus members get free ground shipping when the order is at least $50. Orders under $50 carry an $8 flat fee. Some categories and destinations are excluded.
That makes order size important. A shopper who routinely places $20 or $30 orders will not receive the same value from Plus as someone who naturally consolidates purchases above $50.
Delivery from Club is a separate benefit
Sam's Club also offers local Delivery from Club. Its current help page says Plus members receive free standard delivery on eligible $50+ orders and pay $8 below that threshold. Club-level members currently pay $12 for standard delivery regardless of order minimum.
Faster options cost more. Sam's Club currently lists additional fees for Express and three-hour-or-less delivery, including for Plus members.
A simple break-even test
Ignore marketing language and estimate how many paid fees the upgrade would actually eliminate for your household.
The right comparison is the incremental membership cost versus fees you would truly have paid—not the theoretical maximum value of every listed benefit.
Other Plus benefits can matter too
Sam's Club currently advertises other Plus benefits including 2% Sam's Cash on qualifying in-club purchases, early shopping hours, and early access to some online savings events. Those can improve the economics, but they should be valued based on your actual behavior.
How to get more value without shopping more
- Combine routine online purchases into $50+ orders when practical.
- Use standard delivery when speed is not important rather than paying for express.
- Track how often Plus actually saves a fee during a normal year.
- Do not increase spending simply to cross a threshold.
- Reassess before renewal rather than assuming last year's usage will repeat.
Bottom line
Plus tends to make more sense for households that already use Sam's Club frequently and value shipping or local delivery. The membership is less compelling when most purchases happen in-club and delivery is rare. The best test is a personal fee-savings tally, not the headline list of perks.
